Monthly books review · for small businesses

Your books, reviewed every month. One page. No jargon.

BooksCheck reads your QuickBooks and Stripe, flags what looks off in plain English, and puts one page in your inbox by the 7th — P&L, cash flow, odd expenses, overdue invoices, and the questions that belong to your CPA. Every number is checked by a human before it ships.

Revenue$24,300$22,100
Cost of goods$8,100$7,400
Gross profit$16,200$14,700

Flagged: $640 “equipment repair” (Sep 18) is 3× the usual monthly repair spend — worth confirming it was the oven service call, not a duplicate charge.
Overdue: invoice #1042, $1,850, 47 days — the oldest and largest. A drafted reminder is included with the one-pager; you send it.

Sample document — all names, numbers, and businesses are fictional, and the figures are illustrative. Real reviews use your actual books. This is a review, not bookkeeping or tax preparation — tax and compliance questions are flagged for your CPA.

The problem

Most books aren’t wrong. They’re just never looked at.

“Inconsistent, sporadic recordkeeping is the most-cited bookkeeping error for small businesses.” Focus CPA, via EIN News — September 15, 2026

Transactions pile up uncategorized, a duplicate charge hides in the card feed, an invoice from six weeks ago is still “about to be paid.” None of it surfaces until tax season, when it’s expensive. The usual fixes are a full bookkeeping service — a bigger job, at a bigger price — or another month of not looking. A monthly review is the smaller, honest middle:

Bench Bookkeeping LightA bookkeeper keeps your books on Bench’s own platform (revenue up to $250K/yr)from $199/mo
QuickBooks Experts Full-ServiceA dedicated bookkeeper keeps your books inside QuickBooksfrom $300/mo
You, at month-endThe same records, reviewed by whoever has a free evening$0 + your evenings
BooksCheck PlusA monthly review of the books you already keep — one page, flags, drafted reminders$129/mo · first month free

Published starting prices as listed by each provider — Bench checked October 2026; QuickBooks Experts pricing retrieved September 2026. The first two rows are full bookkeeping — a different, larger job than a monthly review. This table is a modeled comparison of published rates, not a quote.

How it works

Four steps. You do the first one once.

1

Grant read-only access

Sign a plain-language engagement letter, then invite us as a reports-only user in QuickBooks Online and connect Stripe read-only. Never your password, never login access — and you can revoke it anytime.

2

We pull the month

Last month’s transactions, P&L, balance-sheet summary, A/R aging, and invoice status — from the records you already have. Missing data gets flagged, not guessed at.

3

Draft, then the human gate

The one-pager is drafted with AI assistance, then a person checks every number against your QuickBooks reports, verifies each flag, and sweeps out anything that sounds like tax advice. Nothing ships unverified.

4

One page lands by the 7th

P&L and cash-flow summaries, flagged odd expenses in plain English, your overdue invoices with reminders drafted, and a “flags for your CPA” section. Questions answered by email within 24 hours.

The deliverable

This is the whole product: one page

The sample at right is the actual format — a fictional café, invented numbers, labeled as a sample because that’s what it is. Your version is built from your real books, and every figure on it is tied to a source report before it reaches you.

The format never changes: summaries first, then what looks off, then what’s overdue, then the one clear action. Two minutes to read, once a month.

The offer

A monthly set of trained eyes on your numbers

You’re not buying bookkeeping. You’re buying a review — the same page, the same date, every month.

Every month, you receive

  • The one-pager — P&L summary and cash-flow summary for the month, in plain English
  • Flagged odd expenses — unusual spikes, uncategorized charges, duplicates, personal expenses mixed in — each with a plain-English explanation
  • Overdue-invoice list — who owes you, how much, how late — with a payment reminder drafted for each. You send them
  • Flags for your CPA — anything that smells like a tax question, written up as a question for your CPA, never answered by us
  • On Plus: trend notes and reminder drafts twice a month
  • On Complete: a quarterly roll-up and receipt chasing until missing paperwork is resolved

What we never do

  • Prepare or file taxes, or advise on them
  • Decide what you should deduct
  • Run payroll, or represent you to the IRS
  • Make payments or move your money, in any way
  • Ask for your password, or log in as you
  • Call your review an examination of every transaction — it isn’t one

The referral line is the whole model: anything that looks like a tax question goes to your CPA — and we make their job cheaper by handing them clean, current books.

The checkable details

For the skeptic who verifies before buying

Everything on this page, stated exactly — deliverables, tools, timelines, limits.

What you receive

  • One page per month: P&L summary, cash-flow summary, flagged anomalies with explanations, overdue-invoice list with drafted reminders, flags-for-your-CPA section
  • Plus: month-over-month trend notes (3–5 lines), top 10 flags, reminder drafts twice a month, a 4-sentence check-in email
  • Complete: quarterly roll-up by the 10th after quarter-end, receipt chasing, same-day support in business hours

What it runs on

Your QuickBooks Online, via a reports-only invite you control, and your Stripe, via a read-only connection. Working files live in encrypted cloud folders; your data is never sold or shared. BooksCheck works inside the records you already keep — we don’t move you to new software.

Timelines

  • One-pager delivered by the 7th of every month — or the month is free
  • Email questions answered within 24 hours (same-day on Complete, business hours)
  • Plus reminder drafts land mid-month and month-end
  • Quarterly roll-up by the 10th after quarter-end (Complete)

Limits, plainly

A review reads the records you have. It is not an examination of every transaction, and it doesn’t promise to catch every error — every number on the page is tied to a source report and human-checked, and if a figure can’t be verified, it doesn’t ship. Catch-up work beyond 3 months of unreconciled history is out of scope at every tier (quoted separately as a one-time project, minimum $150, or referred out).

What we are not

BooksCheck is a review service. It is not bookkeeping, not tax preparation, and not tax advice. We never file anything, never decide a deduction, and never touch client funds. That boundary is the product’s safety feature, not fine print.

Who stands behind it

Ruben “Chitico” Olaverria, Chicago, IL. He runs the verification pass and signs off every one-pager personally — the sign-off is logged per client, per month. Reach him at chiticohq+bookscheck@zohomail.com. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see your card number.

Questions

Asked by owners, answered straight

Is this bookkeeping?

No. A bookkeeper records and reconciles your transactions. BooksCheck reads the records you already have, summarizes them on one page, and flags what looks off. If your books need keeping, the cost table above shows what full bookkeeping runs — we’re the lighter layer after that.

Is this tax advice?

Never. Anything that looks like a tax question becomes a written flag for your CPA. We don’t file returns, plan taxes, estimate tax bills, or tell you what to deduct — at any tier, at any price.

How do you see my books?

You invite us as a reports-only user in QuickBooks Online and connect Stripe with read-only permissions. We never ask for your password and never log in as you — and you can revoke both in a minute, anytime.

Who checks the numbers?

Portions of each review are drafted with AI assistance; then a human verifies every number against your QuickBooks reports, checks each flagged item in the source data, and signs off before delivery. If a number can’t be verified, it doesn’t ship.

What if you’re late?

The one-pager is due by the 7th. If the verification pass can’t finish in time, we tell you and it arrives the next day. If we miss the 7th, that month costs you nothing — no form, no call, nothing to claim.

My books are months behind. Can you catch me up?

The review covers your current month. Catch-up beyond 3 months of unreconciled history isn’t part of any tier — it’s quoted separately as a one-time project (minimum $150, paid up front) or referred out to a bookkeeper.

How do I cancel?

By email. 30 days’ notice, and the final month is prorated. While you’re subscribed, your founding rate stays locked for 12 months; reviews happen once a year with 30 days’ notice.
